Gazette Readership Hits New
Records
by Ned Benton
(February 5, 2004) What do we know about Larchmont
Gazette readers? We don't collect tracking information or install
spybots
on readers computers, but our server does maintain anonymous
general statistics about patterns of access to the Gazette.
For starters, we know that there are more
and more readers each month. January 2004 broke another record,
with more than 25,000 visitors. The average visitor selected
five articles during a visit.

Outside of the USA, our largest source of readership
is the Netherlands, followed by Canada and Belgium. During
January 2004, we've been visited from more than 60 countries,
including France, India, Israel, Estonia,
Saudi Arabia, Japan, Argentina, Rwanda, Thailand and even
the Cocos Islands.
Most people find the Gazette by clicking through
our weekly email message. However, some of our pages are
favorites of the search engines. For example, if you Ask
Jeeves "What wine goes with turkey?"
Jeeves is sure to include our local wine stores' Thanksgiving
wine suggestions near the top of his list
of recommended websites. Google
suggests Gazette articles for such offbeat requests
as "please
don't eat the daisies house"
- you get the article about the Kerr
house - and "civil war cannons" - you get the
article about the Yacht Club donating
civil war cannons for war rationing in 1942.
Google is
often given names of local restaurants, and it usually serves
up our restaurant
reviews and the scanned menus in our local
guide. During January 2004, more than 1,100 people
read restaurant reviews, and many of them also
perused
the menus, which have been scanned for online access.
The Calendar is
a destination for many readers. The page features the Gazette
Community Calendar, but also includes links to other government,
school and community organization calendars.
An area of developing interest is the Gazette's
Free Classified Ads. During January, there were more than
2,600 visits to the classifieds. Ads include
jobs, cars, stereo equipment, apartments, and antiques.
The server can tell what kind of software
is asking for web pages. About three-quarters for our readers
use Internet Explorer as their browser, followed by AOL's
browser (15%) and Netscape (10%). Ninety percent use a version
of the MS windows operating systems, followed by 6% using
the Apple Macintosh system.
Some articles are consistent general-interest
favorites, even though they are no longer listed on the front
page. Examples include:
In the History section, favorites include:
The Gazette appears on other websites, such
as onlinenewspapers.com, newyorkmetro.com,
Kidon
Media-link and USA
Newspapers (recognized news media listings.)
One of the more arcane listings is Aserico which
maintains a comprehensive listing of the "Gazettes" of the
world -- 200 of them!
