Jewelry by Immigrant Artisans at Designer One
Just in Time for Valentine's Day
by Myra Hafetz
(February 2, 2005) Just in time for Valentine’s Day, artisans
from the jewelry workshop of the Hispanic
Resource Center of Larchmont-Mamaroneck, will be
exhibiting and selling their work at Eric
Newland’s Designer One in Larchmont. The show is
entitled “Gift of Love” and includes necklaces
and bracelets made with stones in the shape of hearts.
Started at the Hispanic Resource Center in
April of 2004, the workshop is open to immigrants who wish to learn jewelry
making as a trade. It is taught by Aurelio Castano and meets weekly.
Mr. Castano, who came to the United States from Colombia, is an
artist in many media, a teacher at the Westchester Art Workshop,
which is part of the Westchester Community College, and a member
of
the Mamaroneck Artists’ Guild. He is donating
his time to the Center so that other immigrants
who have come to this country with nothing, as he
did, will be able to develop their talents and
fulfill their dreams.
Mr. Newland, who owns a high fashion women’s
clothing and accessory store in Larchmont and is a supporter of community
art (See
MHS "Art of the Calendar" at Designer One),
has offered to sell the jewelry. The bracelets,
necklaces, and earrings will be available from
Monday, February 7th to Monday, February 14th at
Designer One, which is located at
139 Larchmont Avenue in Larchmont, New York.
Mr. Castano and Mr. Newland hope this will be an
annual event.
