USING AN OLD MBA

Dear Career Doctor:

I have a MBA (Marketing) but chose the wrong career. I went to work in an embassy and have been there some years. How do I use my MBA now, as my experience has not been in that line?

Thank you,

Karen

Dear Joanne:

Dear Karen: Some of the most valuable assets of an MBA are the contacts you make. Do you have any friends you went to Business School with who are working in Marketing? If so, contact them and see if they can help you switch fields. If not, contact the Alumni Office at your Business School and see if they will give you a list of alumni who are working where you would like to work.

When networking, describe anything that you have done at the embassy (or any skills you used) to support the kind of work you want to do. For example, if you want to go into sales, you could stress the fact that you have been successful in diplomatic work, because you meet people easily and you are highly trustworthy and persuasive.

If you do not have any experience that supports what you want to do, perhaps you could take a course or two while you are still working at the embassy to refresh your knowledge. This will allow you to start off your resume with your new education and it will show future employers that you are serious about returning to business.
