Mamaroneck Town Referendum Set on New Fire Truck

Residents of Unincorporated Area to Vote: Feb 27

by Harriet Kline

(January 18, 2007) At its second meeting of the new year, the Town of Mamaroneck Board scheduled a special referendum for February 27 and considered a series of big and small ticket capital expenditures.

Referendum

At Wednesday’s meeting the Town Board formally scheduled a special fire district referendum to vote on a proposal to purchase a new fire pumper truck. The new truck will replace a truck purchased in 1979. Because the Fire District will incur debt for this purchase, board members voted unanimously to authorize a bond resolution up to a maximum of $460,000.

The election will take place on Tuesday February 27 from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Weaver Street Firehouse. The election is open only to registered voters who live in the unincorporated area of Mamaroneck. According to Town Clerk Pat DiCioccio, unregistered voters have until January 21 to register for the special election. When asked how many votes were necessary to approve the truck purchase, Ms. DiCioccio indicated “one.”

Participation can be light for fire district votes. A 2003 referendum passed 33 to 2; however that vote involved a relatively small expenditure of $188,000. (See: Turnout for Fire District Vote.)

On February 27, the board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 pm at the firehouse (not at the Town Center Court Room). This will enable board members to certify the referendum after polls close at 9pm.

Other Capital Projects

Town Administrator Steve Altieri also presented the board with proposals to begin the process necessary to implement a number of capital projects discussed during the 2007 budget preparation sessions in the fall. Some will need passage of further bond resolutions, others are already included in the 2007 budget. Capital projects acted on by the board at Wednesday’s meeting include:

● a $160,000 project to replace the 1962 portion of the roof of the highway garage building to be funded with serial bonds. The board approved the bond resolution.

● $23,788 for the purchase of hydraulic snow plows (will be funded with bond anticipation notes)

● $267,000 for the purchase of highway department equipment: an aerial lift truck, skid steer loader, salt spreader and two pickup trucks to be funded with serial bonds – Board approved bond resolution.

● $250,000 for paving and improvements for one part of Brookside Drive (funding included in 2007 budget)

● $100,000 for the purchase of 4 police vehicles (funding included in 2007 budget)

● $55,000 for the replacement of the metal stairwell from parking lot #1 to the Larchmont train station (funding included in the 2007 budget).

Upcoming TOM Meetings

● February 7 at 8:15 pm in the Town Center Court Room

● February 27 at 6:30 pm at the Weaver Street Fire House
