Read-A-Thon To Support Redo at Children's Library
Kids Fest on June 1st Will Celebrate the Planned Renovation
by Susan Bell
(April 3, 2008) Because Katherine and Sarah Larsen love
to read, the children’s room at the Larchmont Public Library has
always been one of their favorite places. When they heard that the children’s
room would soon undergo an important renovation, they wanted to know if
they could help. (See: New
Plan Adds Drama, Light & Space At Children's.)
The answer from Miriam Curnin, library board chair, was an enthusiastic
“Yes!”

The Children’s Room Renovation Committee is sponsoring a Read-A-Thon
to give young readers a way to contribute to the first major library construction
project since 1992. Money raised from the Read-A-Thon, which will run
from April 13th through May 24th, will help with costs for the enlarged
space and enhanced collections for children.
The Read-A-Thon will contribute to the overall $2.7 million required
for the renovations. To date, $2.4 million has been raised. (See: Children's
Library Fundraising Is 85%To Goal.)
The idea is simple. Children who sign up will find sponsors who will
pledge a certain amount of money for each book (or hour or minute) the
participant reads during the Read-A-Thon, just as walkers or runners or
swimmers collect pledges for miles in a charity race. Parents can obtain
further information and registration material at the library or online
at www.larchmontlibrary.org.
“It’s just perfect that children, through the Read-A-Thon,
will help make the new children’s room a reality,” Ms. Curnin
said. “Young readers will be thrilled with the bright, imaginative
environment we’re creating, as will hundreds of children who come
after them.”
Kids Fest on June 1st To Celebrate Planned Renovation
Recognition of Read-A-Thon participants will be part of the program at
Kids Fest, a celebration of the upcoming library renovation scheduled
for Sunday, June 1st in Constitution Park adjacent to the fire station
on Larchmont Avenue. At Kids Fest, all children and their families —
not just Read-A-Thon participants — will be able to make their own
bookmarks; listen to the live music of Groove; participate in interactive
storytelling with Anderson’s Book Store; read with The Voracious
Reader, who will also take their pictures; and snack on free scoops from
Longford’s Ice Cream.
Susan Bell is a member of the Children’s Room
Renovation Committee.
