United Way Honors Larchmont & Mamaroneck For Flood Effort

from the United Way of Larchmont and Mamaroneck

(April 17, 2008) On Friday, April 4th, the Larchmont and Mamaroneck communities were honored with United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s 2007-2008 “Spirit of Westchester and Putnam Community Leadership Award” presented at the annual “Spirit of Caring” awards luncheon. The event, held at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel, drew more that 180 attendees, including community and business leaders from both counties.

Larchmont and Mamaroneck were honored for the way the community rallied to help residents in need. Following the disastrous events of the spring 2007 Nor’easter, much of Larchmont and Mamaroneck, including residents and businesses alike, were challenged with the daunting task of recovery and the return to normalcy. Working closely together, United Way, community leaders, agencies, religious organizations, businesses and individuals were able to help community flood victims regain their lives.

Larchmont and Mamaroneck leaders, officials, and volunteers receive United Way of Westchester and Putnam's highest honor as recognition for the community response to the 2007 Nor'easter.

Homes, businesses, houses of worship, schools and community agencies themselves were flooded and left with massive cleaning and repair needs once the waters receded. United Way and a generous community outpouring helped get flood-stricken agencies back to serving immediate needs with relief funds. Cleanup and repair crews of volunteers helped clean up from the residue of mud and water. Furniture, clothing, food and much more were donated to help in the recovery and relief efforts.

The award was accepted by 30 Larchmont and Mamaroneck residents, including community volunteers, leaders of many local organizations and service agencies, elected officials from both villages and the Town of Mamaroneck, and members of United Way of Larchmont-Mamaroneck volunteer board.

United Way is a local organization that brings together people and resources to find solutions to the area’s most pressing health and human services issues and create positive change in the lives of those who live and work here. United Way is working year-round to nurture children and youth, strengthen families, foster independence for seniors, promote health and wellness, embrace diversity, and increase self-sufficiency.
