Brownies Help Green the Hommocks Conservation Area
by Karen Paul
May 15, 2008) On May 2, members of Murray Avenue Brownie
Troop 2974 celebrated Arbor Day by planting 30 seedlings in the Hommocks
Conservation area on Hommocks Road in the Town of Mamaroneck. Led by Elizabeth
Paul from the Town conservation department and her son Hunter, the girls
planted a mix of wetland rose bushes, toringo apple trees and highbush
cranberry. These were added in an effort to restore the site after the
removal of old trees and invasive species. The troop also spread grass
and wildflower seeds and helped to clean up trash.

Troop leaders Elizabeth Derby and Debi Reich were also on site to guide
the girls. “In the spirit of community service, Murray Brownie Troop
2974 girls all enjoyed getting dirty, planting rose bushes and also cleaning
up garbage along the conservation trail,” reported Ms. Derby.

“It was an enlightening experience to see the girls interacting
with nature in such a productive and positive way,” added Ms. Reich.
“The troop voluntarily came out on a cold and nasty Friday afternoon
and planted trees, looking ahead into their future.”
Elizabeth Paul summed up the experience: “The Brownies and other
scouting troops have contributed greatly to the restoration of this beautiful
conservation area, which was once overgrown with vines. The girls can
come here now and then to see their plants grow and will hopefully have
a sense of pride and stewardship for the property.”

The Brownies enjoyed themselves so much that they have decided to continue
this new tradition of celebrating Arbor Day.
