Lowey & Larchmont Fire Chief Announce $73K Grant
Federal Funds Will Help Fire Department Upgrade Equipment
from Congresswoman Nita Lowey's office
(May 22, 2008) U. S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland)
today announced that the Larchmont Fire Department has been awarded a
$73,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to
upgrade breathing and protective equipment.
“It is vital for local fire departments to have the
equipment they need to protect themselves as they work to keep us safe,”
said Ms. Lowey. “This grant will benefit all residents of Larchmont
who can have confidence that their first responders will be better-equipped
to meet the challenges they face. I am pleased that the Department of
Homeland Security has recognized and is addressing this need.”
"The Department will use the money to update turnout
gear for our firefighters and to purchase Scott Air-Paks,” said
Larchmont Fire Department Chief Richard Heine. “This funding will
improve the operational capabilities and safety for the firefighters in
the department."
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP), which
is administered by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants
and Training in coordination with the U.S. Fire Administration, awards
grants directly to fire departments and EMS agencies. Funds may be used
to increase the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter
health and safety programs, emergency medical service programs, fire prevention
and safety programs, and to purchase new fire equipment.
