Farmers' Market Opens Season With New Vendors: May 31

from the Farmer's Market Committee

(May 29, 2008) “The strawberries are ripening even as you read this,” reported Wendy Weinstein Karp, Dominic Schmitt and Sally Maca, members of the Larchmont Farmers' Market Committee. They were announcing the return of the community market, which will open for its third year in the upper deck parking lot of the Larchmont train station on Saturday, May 31. The market will run every Saturday, rain or shine, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm until December 14.

The committee announced that the market is “bigger and better than ever” due to support from the community. There will be 15 vendors this year selling a variety of local and regional farm-grown produce, fresh bread and baked goods, artisanal cheese, fresh fish, organic produce, pork, chicken and eggs, quiches, wines and ciders, herbs, flowers, and specialty items such as chutneys, hot sauces, soaps and lotions.

The Larchmont market is one of 17 venues operated by Community Markets, which was founded in 1991 with the aim of offering nutritious foods and helping regional farmers.

Returning to Larchmont from last year will be Yuno Farms, Plates Restaurant (with fresh breads, fish and its new pulled pork barbeque sandwiches), the Orchards of Concklin, Newgate Farms, City and Spice Bakery, Pika's Quiche, Bisou & Tartine and Warwick Valley Vineyards. New vendors include Dr. Pickle, offering barrel-style pickles and sauerkraut; Orwasher's Bakery with fresh challah and rye breads; Platte Cove Naturals with home-made granolas; Tierra Farm selling organic roasted nuts and seeds; and The Painted Goat with organic cheese.

There will also be a host of new activities to accompany the shopping.

The master gardeners of the Cornell Cooperative will have a booth set up the first Saturday of every month to provide information for home gardeners, answer questions, and offer mini-workshops throughout the summer and fall. Lea Greenbaum, a trained chef will be demonstrating seasonal recipes with foods selected at the markets. At the Plates tent, Chef Karp will be offering tastings and demonstrating barbeque technique on a new custom-made smoker from New Hampshire.

There will be performances by blues and folk musician Phil Minissale, and musical theatre for the whole family from Broadway Babies on the dates listed below. In addition, the Westchester Children’s will bring its “virtual museum” activity table to the market.
