Little League Marcus Award Goes to Kahn and Schmitt
from the Larchmont Mamaroneck Little League
(June 18, 2008) During the second game of the Larchmont
Mamaroneck Little League (LMLL) Majors Division Championship Series, parents
and players paused for an event
that honors a winner of a very special category. LMLL President David
J.
Fishman presented the league's Daniel Marcus Sportsmanship Award to Sam
Kahn
and Zoe Schmitt, not for the number of runs, hits or strikeouts they had
achieved, but for demonstrating sportsmanship, teamwork, enthusiasm, and
a
pure love of the game.
Daniel Marcus Sportsmanship Award Winners
The award is the only individual player award presented by LMLL and is
given
in memory of Daniel Marcus, a Larchmont Little Leaguer who loved baseball,
played with great enthusiasm, and died ten years ago, just before his
13th
birthday. Daniel's father, Steven Marcus, whose donation supports the
award,
was on hand this year, as has become his tradition.
This year's recipients were selected by a vote of the LMLL board from
dozens
of nominations from local coaches. "We had an especially qualified
group to
choose from this year," Mr. Fishman said, "but in the end we
were moved by
the nomination of Sam and Zoe and that both spoke eloquently of their
quiet
leadership and love of the game.
To get a more complete look at who Daniel was, you can click on the website
www.hellodaniel.com. The site
is a living memorial established by his family. It tells about his loving
family and friends, his great sense of humor, the good times he had on
holidays, and more. It also tells us that Daniel had asthma, a pulmonary
disease which affects millions of people, but is rarely fatal. Sadly,
Daniel was the exception. He died of a sudden asthma attack on January
27, 1998.
After his death, organs from Daniel's body were donated to four critically
ill boys who were given an extra chance at life. The website also notes
that a fund has been established in Daniel's name at the Children's Hospital
at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. (See: How
to Donate.)
"The award is a fitting tribute to a fallen member of our community,"
said
Mr. Fishman. "It embodies the spirit of what we try to accomplish
with youth
sports and with the LMLL. And with this award, we will always remember
Daniel who was the personification of a positive and productive LMLL
player."
The names of previous award winners can be found on the LMLL
website.
