Library Children’s Room Closes as Renovation Begins
by Nancy Donovan
(July 24, 2008) Painted messages and handprints graced
the walls of the Larchmont Library Activity Room on July 3 as children
and their parents participated in “Hand It Over,” a party
to mark the closing of the Children’s Room in preparation for extensive
renovations. (See: New
Plan Adds Drama, Light & Space At Children's Library.)

Materials have been relocated from the Children’s
Room to various areas of the adult library, resulting in lots of fun for
childen exploring different areas of the library. Books for young children
and those beginning to read on their own are in the Periodical Reading
Room on the main level; children’s “chapter books” are
on the mezzanine along with the young adult collection; and children’s
non-fiction is on the lower level of the library under the bow windows.
Children’s videos, DVDs, and audiobooks are in the alcove next to
the front door, and children’s music CDs are in the case holding
adult music. The library is a-buzz with activity as children find their
way around.
The library is determined to keep activities for children
on the schedule. Story times, Rhythm and Rhyme, the Summer Reading Game
and crafts are scheduled through mid-August for varying age groups. Family
Fun Fridays are planned as an opportunity to play games in a cool environment
with family and friends from 3 to 4:30 every Friday afternoon. All activities
are free; finding their location will entail a treasure hunt.
Whenever possible, the programs will be in the Village
Center or on the main library lawn, but some programs may take place in
various rooms in the library, depending on availability. “It’s
an adventure for children to come to the Library and then find out where
the program will be” said Diane Courtney, Library Director. “The
staff is making every effort to help the children feel welcome and carry
on with programs and events as we do every summer. We want to continue
to serve Larchmont’s children as we renovate the Children’s
Room, and we’re working hard adapting to the space constraints.”
For those needing help with a specific title or subject,
the reference staff at the Library is always willing to help. Children’s
books and other media can be reserved from other libraries and sent to
Larchmont if the local copy is unavailable.
Check the Larchmont
Library website for more information on the renovation and the progress
of the fund raising efforts.
