Patio Door Burglars Hit Mamaroneck Town
by Judy Silberstein
(August 14, 2008) According to Detective Lt. Jerry McCarthy,
there have been six home robberies in Town of Mamaroneck since early May,
five with similar modus operandi: entry through a patio door – often
by throwing a rock through the glass.
Jewelry was the “big thing” taken he said.
Other items included silver, lap tops, digital cameras and, in one home,
an expensive handbag and lingerie.
The homes were relatively near each other, but not along
any one street or neighborhood. Break-ins occurred on Weaver Street, Stoneyside
Drive, Wingfoot Drive, East Garden Road, Mohegan Road and Byron Lane.
Jennifer Fisher, whose Mohegan Road home was robbed in June,
said intruders entered through an unlocked patio door and took all the
jewelry in her home while she was out for a few hours during the day.
“They stole my grandmother’s engagement ring that had been
handed down,” she said.
Detective McCarthy advises that people “lock doors
and set their alarms, even if they are going out for only a few hours.”
In addition, “be a good neighbor – if you see something out
of the ordinary, call the police department.” Ms. Fisher said she
heard after the robbery that neighbors or their employees had noticed
a suspicious man and woman parked outside her home two days in a row,
but had not thought to mention it to her or to the police. She was told
that there were a number of similar burglaries in Scarsdale and Edgemont.
Detective McCarthy, who on Thursday, August 14 had just
come from a meeting with neighboring police departments, said Mamaroneck
Town is collaborating with other jurisdictions. “We are pursuing
leads,” he said, but declined to comment further since the investigation
is ongoing.
Lt. Walter Burke of the Larchmont Police Department said there had not
been similar cases in the Village. “Our burglary rate is way down,
for both commercial and residential,” he noted. “Last year
there were 12 and, as of today, 9 for 2008,” he reported. Burglaries
would include items stolen from homes or garages, he explained, but not
from a car, lawn or other outdoor location.
