Cub Scouts Set New Record for Can Collection

by Steve Lehman, Pack 33 Chairman

(November 20, 2008) Cub Scout Pack 33 of Larchmont collected more food than ever in the annual “Scouting For Food” event run by the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Pack 33 joined Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts throughout the area in going door-to-door during the week of October 20th to collect food for needy kids and families in the community. Altogether, Scouts throughout the region collected more than 15,000 cans of food.

Pack 33 Cub Scouts, such as Harrison Crandall and Wade Steely, collecedt more than 1,800 cans of food that will go to needy individuals and families.

The biggest contributor to the event was Larchmont's Pack 33, which is also one of the most active packs in the council, with almost 90 Cub Scouts in the first through fifth grades and 25 adult leaders. Pack 33 collected over 1,800 cans of food from Larchmont friends and neighbors, surpassing last year’s effort by 500 cans. (See: Larchmont Cubs Collect the Most Cans in Scout Food Drive.)

The Scouts dropped the food off at the Chatsworth Avenue branch of Commerce Bank, since renamed TD Bank, which sponsored the event throughout Westchester and Putnam counties. Pack 33 leaders found the team at the bank to be "extremely helpful in making this a success."

All the items were donated to Food Bank of Westchester and Putnam C.A.P. (Community Action Program), which distribute food to needy families in the two counties.

As explained on Pack 33's website, "Hunger hurts. Approximately 200,000 families are now served by food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Westchester County alone." Around one third of those served are children, and "many agencies rely on Food Bank and Putnam C.A.P. as their primary source of food."
