JOHN FREEMAN

John L. Freeman, 96, of Rye, February 19, 2008. For 61 years the beloved husband of Josephine W. (Dody) Freeman, who passed away January 31, 2008.

He was born in New York City and educated at Horace Mann School, Harvard College, and Columbia Law School. Upon graduating from law school in 1935, he joined the firm of Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz, with which he remained for over 70 years, becoming senior partner.

After the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private and rose to the rank of major. He landed on Omaha Beach with the 29th Infantry Division on D-Day, served throughout the European campaign, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was a trustee and President of the Jewish Home and Hospital for Aged, of which his father, Charles H. Freeman, had also been President. He also served as a trustee and President of Jewish Child Care Association of New York.

He is survived by his son David and his wife Ellen of Larchmont; his son Bill and his wife Beth of Hillsborough, CA; his son-in-law Robert Garafola of New York City; his grandchildren Matt, Julie, Laura and Scott Freeman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Betsy. Always caring, giving, full of good humor and relentlessly optimistic, he never stopped insisting he was a lucky man. We are the ones who are lucky to have known him.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Contributions to the Jewish Home and Hospital Foundation, 120 West 106 St., NYC 10025.
